The Spotlight on ... Adam Hess

He's like a cross between Adam Bloom and Ian Curtis, he's a frenetic gagsmith, and he's and Rubik's Cube showboater – it's Adam Hess

Adam Hess

Where in London do you live?
Croydon.

How long have you been gigging for?
I did a very small handful of gigs while at uni, but only really started properly in February 2011.

What do we need to know about you?
I try to make my jokes as short as possible and say as many as I can. I also used to get really nervous and drink loads of Red Bull before I went on stage which made me talk even quicker but now that I'm a bit more "relaxed", I'm a bit slower and do a mix of stories and one liners. (Not puns or wordplay, but just very short jokes).

What do we not need to know about you, but you're going to tell us anyway?
I can recite pi to about 150 decimal places, can do a Rubik's Cube in about 2 minutes and am rubbish at every single sport.

What would you like to achieve most in your comedy career?
I'd be very happy with just being able to gig every night and spend my all my days writing jokes either for myself or for TV things.

What happened with/to you in Edinburgh this year?
I did two double headers. One with Sean McLoughlin and one with David Elms and both were unbelievably fun and I learnt so much I think/hope. I also saw some of the best shows I've ever seen in my life and made me realise how much I need to up my game!

What do your family think of your act?
They're supportive, but my Dad once said 'Well they're not really jokes are they. They're just odd sentences'.

Who makes you laugh?
Steve Martin, The Onion, Simon Amstell.

If you were to appear on Parkinson as a guest, what would be your walk-on music?
The This Morning theme tune.

Do you have a secret talent?
I like to play the piano, but there's never a piano anywhere that me and my friends go, so nobody believes me. (I only know songs that were popular in 2003-5 though, so no great loss to society.)

Are you funnier off or onstage?
Probably onstage. Thankfully nobody reviews my off-stage behaviour.
