The Spotlight on ... Inel Tomlinson

Tuesday, June 29 2010

He was runner-up at the latest Hackney Empire New Act competition, he runs a monthly night in Islington and he loves telling audiences Super Mario was black ... that's right, it's Inel Tomlinson!

Name: Inel Tomlinson

Where do you live?: Currently Living in North London, home of ‘The Crackhead’, Netto and the most dangerous bus route in London, The N29 !

How long have you been gigging for?: Been going for around five years now with a little hiatus in the middle to gain my teaching degree.

What do you do?: I’m a storytelling comedian that likes to celebrate the rubbish things in life in a fun way. I’m a positive moaner if there is such a thing. I also run my own comedy night Kinetic Comedy every last Thursday of the month down in Upper Street. I run the night with film maker Richard Wilson.

I'm currently creating my own show with a few talented friends and comedians. Stay tuned for a clip of one of the sketches coming out next month: Grand Theft Drive-Thru!

Who makes you laugh?: On the circuit: Jason Patterson, Don Biswas and Andi Osho have been cracking me up recently. Off the circuit: The Crazies that live/occupy my area. It's funny to watch them talk to themselves during the day, but at night, it's a different story. You don't cross the street when you see them, you walk in the road. If you ever find yourself walking in the bus lane at night, then you know you need to get home sharpish.

At which London venues do you commonly appear?: You can catch me all over London and outside (When the car is working.) Check my site for a full gig list.

What is your favourite London venue?: The Hackney Empire, easily. Definitely my favourite venue I have performed in by far. The audience was electric there and the laughter sounds like it carries for miles. Can't see shit through all the lights though. I've also seen a few of my heroes there, Rudi Lickwood, Curtis Walker, and Gina Yashere to name a few.

What are you/should you be famous for?: I wouldn't use the word famous, but recently I was runner-up at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year 2010.

Who is your celebrity doppelganger?: Charlie Murphy ... Well if Charlie taught kids in Hackney and had to catch the night bus home from gigs, he'd look like me.

Name one over-rated and one under-rated comedian. I don’t think you can say people are over-rated, especially in comedy. If you make people laugh, you are doing a good job in my book. Everyone has their own audience that they cater to best. If you feel under-rated then keep pushing on. Talent always shines through in comedy, but it does help to be in the right place at the right time in this game.

Can you dance?: Please, do black men have big dicks?!

Whose sex face would you least like to see?: Stephen Hawking.

Audiences love it when I ... tell them Super Mario was black.

Audiences hate it when I ... frighten them about the night bus. I've heard a punter say to his girlfriend: "You ain't gettin' another drink love, that's cab money now."

And here's Inel at the King's Head in Crouch End ...
