Upstairs at the Mason's – your first five years in pictures
Happy birthday to Upstairs at the Mason's! The classy little Mayfair club is five years old and celebrates with a birthday show next week. Let's have a look at your best bits.
One of the biggest stars on the circuit right now, Angelos from Shooting Stars, pays a visit earlier this year
Upstairs at the Mason's is one of those lucky clubs that has big names doing a secret turn. Here's Michael McIntyre at last year's fourth birthday show, looking in typically shy and retiring mood. Is that a rosé, by the way?!
Resident MC James Mullinger. He started the club in May 2005 with Verity Carter, Colin Owens and Jules Tuddenham. Mullinger continues to compere today.
The club was temporarily shut down by police in 2006 after a punter complained of hearing offensive material. The club's reopening a year later, following a change of landlord, was a Victory For Common Sense.
Gangly comedy guru Stephen Merchant performed in February 2009. Other big names to have performed at the Mason's include Russell Brand, Jimmy Carr, Rhod Gilbert and Stewart Lee, who headlines next week's birthday show.
As did Mr Amstell in March 2006. The club holds about 70 punters and sits in the heart of Mayfair just off Regent Street. Rooms above pubs can make for wonderful little comedy clubs and Upstairs at the Mason's is a splendid example
Here's Shappi Khorsandi doing a turn in February last year. Of course no club is a conveyor belt of big name TV comics; week to week it remains one of the finest small clubs on the circuit and impressively cheap at £6
And being in Mayfair feels pretty damn good, whatever the reason
