The geek shall inherit the mirth (1st birthday-tastic)

Saturday, March 06 2010

The London circuit is full of little niche clubs that revel in being, well, niche. And one of them, Geeks Night Out, turns 1 this weekend! So what's it all about?

In its brief history, Geek Night Out has seen John Gordillo talking about leaflets, Wil Hodgson talking about wrestling (the old school English variety) and Reginald D Hunter talk about, well, whatever Reginald D Hunter wants to talk about.

Yep, it's one of those shows on the circuit where comedians have the chance to go off-piste, and instead of running through some of their usual routine, doing something bespoke for that night. Others include Richard Sandling's Perfect Movie (for film fanatics) and Lost Treasures of the Black Heart (Josie Long's 'show and tell' club about unsung heroes and obscure facts.)

At a Geek Night Out gig, comics talk about just stuff they really like! Stuff they're geeky about.

Paul Gannon (above) and Rob Deb started the night and tonight it celebrates its first birthday with a show. Early gigs saw it attract a hardcore geek audience, nowadays the audiences are larger and more varied and it has settled at the Comedy Pub in Piccadilly (also home to the splendid Soho Comedy Club).

Paul says: "The idea came from Edinburgh 2008 when we did a special version of Rob's show, threw out his set and answered questions and got a few other acts to do a turn. It worked well so we thought we'd try it on the circuit.

"There are so many comedy nights out there, you may as well do something different. And a lot of it is 'I hate this, I hate that', it's quite nice to get stand-ups talking about things they love.

He adds that, far from being a word to be shied away from, there's a bit of geek in all of us: "I used to have a bit in my stand-up set kind of explaining what a geek is – if you follow a football team up and down the country, you're a football geek; if you love soap operas and watch them every day, you're a soap opera geek; if you're a 40-year-old man with a huge collection of dirty videos, you're probably a sex offender."
