Where to see Jessica Fostekew:

The Spotlight on ... Jessica Fostekew

Tuesday, March 02 2010

She co-runs the splendid House of Mirth nights with Sara Pascoe, she categorises Lee Evans alongside reggae music and she's hot for Saracen from Gladiators – that's right, it's Jessica Fostekew!

Name: Jessica Fostekew

Where do you live?: Peckham. I’m actually a lot poorer than I look. Occasionally my Mum buys me a cardigan from Monsoon and I do speak quite well, so people can get confused. I’ve been financially confined to south-east London for seven years. It’s comedically fruitful though. Just yesterday at the Peckham swimming baths a man stood by the side of the busy pool and nattered to me for around five minutes about his goggles being broken – all the while with a huge erection. I was simultaneously amused, repulsed and yes, slightly flattered. Ahh. Peckham.

How long have you been gigging?: Since January 2008.

What do you do?: Tell jokes and stories with jokes in them. They’re always based in truth. I do writing and acting and improvised comedy as well – I did that for a long time before I was brave enough to stand up.

Who makes you laugh?: My dad – on purpose. My mum and my siblings – never on purpose. There are too many excellent comedians to list, but a few of the best are Stewart Lee, Shappi Khorsandi, Brian Gittins, Doug Stanhope, Angelos Epithemous, Julia Davis, Sally Philips, Mark Heap, Doon Mackichan, Kevin Eldon… oh no, there are loads more. Too many.

At which London venues do you usually appear?: The amazing House of Mirth at the Betsy Trotwood, which I run with the incredible Sara Pascoe. That’s the last Tuesday of every month. It’s become a really glorious little night, I’m ever so proud of it. The rest of the month I’m all over the shop, Downstairs at the King’s Head, Comedy at the Kirk, Up the Creek, Get Happy, Good Ship Comedy and many, many other grubby little rooms above or below pubs.

What is your favourite London venue?: The Comedy Café? Or Up The Creek? Or the Store? Knock2Bag is pretty amazing, as are all of Rupert Majendie’s gigs. Or House of Mirth. You decide. I just can’t.

Name an overrated and an underrated comedian: I personally think Lee Evans is overrated. As a child, I LOVED him, but as an adult it makes me squirm and gives me a headache, like cheap white chocolate or reggae music. There are things you just grow out of.

Underrated is harder. Two stand ups who jump to mind, who aren’t big yet, but certainly will be one day, because they’re innately brilliant at it, are Tania Edwards and Luke Benson.

What are you/ should you be famous for?: My gullibility/ I don’t know … I’m really cracking at hugs, I make very good scrambled eggs AND I tell an alright yarn … one of those things.

Which celebrity do you look like?: None, apparently. If you suggest one though, I’ll probably believe you.

Whose sex face would you least like to see?: Saracen from the Gladiators. I'd have nothing left to live for.

Audiences love it when I … tickle them.

Audiences hate it when I … physically do go and tickle them with my actual hands on their actual armpits and knees. If I’m honest, I’ve never genuinely tried that. I might now though.
