Josie digs up Lost Treasures and old comedy clubs

Friday, October 30 2009

Who gives you eeextraaa WHO, WHO, WHO, WHO? Well, Josie Long does in her two new regular clubs, where you don't just get comedy, you learn stuff, win stuff, can buy stuff, contribute stuff...

If you like your comedy served with bonus treats like enlightenment and interaction, you can rely on Josie Long to deliver. Just look at the two clubs she is bringing to the London circuit, after a wee while away from the comedy spotlight. One's new, one's a welcome revival of an old one.

The new one is Lost Treasures of the Black Heart in Camden. The Black Heart refers to the pub where it takes place, the lost treasures refer to the unsung heroes and obscure facts that the comics will be talking about. If you are even vaguely of an curious bent, you should take a look. Learning via the medium of sketches – why couldn't school be like that?!

You will also be able to bring your own recommendations and facts to enter in a 'register of obscurity'. If LondonisFunny were to perform, it would discuss Super Furry Animals side-projects, 1997-. Meanwhile, the performers will be selling at a merchandise table all sorts of oddments they have made for the gig, plus there will be a re-creation of William Blake's lost masterpiece The Ancient Britons! Nope, we don't know it either! That's partly the point.

Josie's BANG up for this kind of caper. Lost Treasures is in the same lineage as Robin Ince's School for Gifted Children, plus she was a regular guest on Robin's podcast Show and Tell. Josie's 2008 Edinburgh show, All of the Planet's Wonders, demonstrated in itself the joy of learning.

The second regular club Josie is presenting is Sunday Night Adventure Club. Each night has a different theme (the first one is 'the Mysterious Depths') and the comics who drop by (think Pappy's, Wozniak, Suttie) all produce something on that theme. As ever, there are bonus treats, with competitions, games and special guests. SNAC ran for three years in Crystal Palace, run by Josie and Helen Zaltzman (of Answer Me This podcast-fame, and Andy Z's sis) until it stopped in 2008. Its home now is the Hackney Empire.

So there you have it. Click here for Lost Treasures of the Black Heart dates (the first one is next Tuesday, November 3), and here for Sunday Night Adventure Club dates (first one November 22). Enjoy!
