10 Questions: 80s Movie Flashback

Saturday, August 15 2009

Ever wondered what happened to Marty McFly once the cameras stopped rolling? Rachel Anderson, Rik Moore and Fraser have the answer to this and other mysteries of 1980s cinema.

What is your show, I Wanna Be Famous, about?
It’s about what characters from 80s movies are up to now that the cameras have stopped rolling. 20 years on or so, where has life taken them? We cover Back to the Future, Karate Kid, Dirty Dancing and Top Gun in this show, plus a few surprises. All the characters we do are quite unique takes on the originals – we’ve taken some liberties with them.

Why did you decide to do a show about this?
It all came from me & Fraser shopping for trainers whilst drunk at last year’s Fringe. We should have been writing a 5 minute bit for a topical show that our mates the Scurvy were doing. Fraser bought these slightly futuristic looking Converse, so I started calling him McFly.

Somehow from that we got to the idea that it would be interesting to see Marty McFly, having seen the future, do the topical show spot. Fraser’s American accent is amazingly rubbish – coming off between a southern belle and a 70s superfly guy – but he soldiered on anyway. Bizarrely, that went really well, so we started gigging that around, and we came up with the idea of trying to cover off other movies. I know it seems random, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.

We then needed something to link the different movies to give us time to change costumes. We’ve always loved Rachel (Anderson)’s stand-up, so approached her to see if she’d like to try a character as a sort of MC for the gig. To our surprise, she said yes, and slowly the show came together.

If your show was a dog, what kind of dog would it be?
An over-excited labrador that bounds around like a maniac and wins your love and affection.

Complete this sentence: "If you like (blank), then you'll like my show"
"If you like the idea of Mr Miyagi and Daniel The Karate Kid running a bed & breakfast in Torquay, then you'll like my show."

Is the Edinburgh Comedy Award important to you?
It’s got a lot of history, and I’m glad they didn’t stop it just because they were short of a sponsor this year. That said, I believe that me holding that opinion is just about the closest we’ll ever get to holding the award itself.

Which other acts would you recommend this year?
Lewis Shaffer’s always great value, Pat Monahan’s work-in-progress I saw a month ago was very, very funny. George Ryegold has made me cry with laughter in the past, so he’s well worth a look. Plus, Rachel’s in a great three-hander called Speed Bumps.

What is the most frightening thing about the Edinburgh Festival?
The impending damage to my liver.

Any tips on where to get the best pint or pie in Edinburgh?
Last year we seemed to bounce between the Meadow Bar Laughing Horse venue and the Library Bar at the Teviot, like a drunken version of arcade classic Pong. I imagine that could easily be repeated. We ended up in the Penny Black one early morning last year. It was like we were in a movie called One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest 2: We Opened A Bar! This year, we’ll probably avoid that by joining Imran Yusuf on his endless 24/7 quest for crepes.

Sum up the festival in one word
Hoopla.

80s Movie Flashback is on at the Counting House until August 22 at 00.15am (free).
