10 Questions with... Sajeela Kershi
Her appearance on Brendon Burns's If.Comedy Award winning show in 2007 certainly got Sajeela Kershi plenty of attention – much of it bigoted and ignorant, and Bitch Got Owned! is her comedy take on the story.
What is your show, Bitch Got Owned, about?
Bitch got Owned! is about not being pigeon holed, which is what people tend to do when they don't have all the facts in front of them...
I got my big break playing an integral role in the 2007 If.Comedy Award winning show by Brendon Burns. I found myself being vilified on YouTube upon release of the viral two-minute clip from the show – a lot of comments were racist, abusive and recurring comment was 'owned' or 'bitch got owned'!
Why did you decide to do a show about this?
It was the first time I bad experienced this online culture – I was intrigued how people made judgments about a situation without seeing the whole thing – I thought I would look at the word 'owned' and give my own interpretation of it through true stories from my own life.
How ready is it?
It's been a labour of love, perhaps the birth of it has been induced a little prematurely. I've delivered a fairly healthy 50mins show with a few complications but I'm confident it will mature well and be in peak condition over the three weeks of Edinburgh...
If your show was a dog, what kind of dog would it be?
I was going to say 'Paris Hilton', but that would suggest my show was a vacuous waste of space... so I'll go for a bitch wolf in sheepdogs clothing. I'm also doing a mixed bill show cheekily called 'Spirits of the Fringe' (audiences see a bite-sized smorgasboard of lots of different shows at the fringe), which is called Scooby Doo of course.
I'm also in a mixed bill show cheekily called 'Spirits of the Fringe' (a show for performers to promote their own shows and for audiences to see a bitesized smorgsboard of whats on at the Fringe) – that is Scooby Doo of course.
Complete this sentence: "If you like (blank) then you'll like my show"
...to find out who the real Sajeela Kershi is – bollywood drama – incredulous but true funny stories all wrapped up with a moral ribbon – yeah, you might just like my show.
Is the Edinburgh Comedy Award important to you?
I live for it... actually I love the whole ceremony party night...I've been incredibly lucky to have attended the past two years, with Brendon in 2007 and again last year to help present the awards. I wore a sari and worked it like I was at the Oscars! Yes I am a pretentious little diva at heart! The award wouldn't necessarily be so important to me had I not seen first hand how it helps your career, so yes getting a nod for my first show would just be the most amazing thing that could happen. I think it's good to have a goal post to work towards. Though everyone pretends it's not important to them when it clearly is.
What is the most frightening thing about the Edinburgh Festival?
No audience, bad reviews/no reviews, The Edinburgh diet, losing weight even though you've eaten deep-fried everything for a month. That's freaky, hell I ain't complaining.
Which other acts would you recommend this year?
A-team the Musical, Anil Desai, Ava Vidal, Minority Report, Communal Living, Andrew Watts, Jamie Kilstein, Ali McGregor's Late Nite Variety Night, Angus and Duncan's Teatime Treats, Jo Romero, Patrick Monahan, Sarah Louise-Young, Speed Bumps, Shaggers, Adam Hills, Reg D Hunter, Lewis Schaffer, Robin Ince, Nick Wilty, Glenn Wool, Nick Doody (made me cry), Brendon Burns of course. The Laughing Horse Free Fringe et al and £5 Fringe should be supported too – it's getting back to basics of what a Fringe is about.
Can you recommend where to get the best pie/pint in Edinburgh?
I don't really do pies, even though I look like the girl who ate them all. I love the curries at the Mosque Kitchen, they are authentic, like i would make and reasonably priced and staff are friendly. Drinkie times are mostly spent in the Loft Bar of the Gilded Balloon and the Library Bar.
Sum up the festival in one word
