10 Questions with... Geek Night Out

Monday, August 03 2009

Geek Night Out is the place where comedians speak candidly and passionately about the things they are geeky about. This one-off, in aid of Cancer Research, features Reginald D Hunter and Wil Hodgson among others opening up, say Rob Deb (right) and Paul Gannon.

What is your show, Geek Night Out Charity Evening about?
Geek Night Out is what happens when you tell a comedian they are in safe environment and they can talk about their favourite passions in front of a very keen audience. As a result, we've dug deep in the personal wants and desires of many a stand up comic. We've had comics talk about their love of everything from Star Wars, World of Warcraft or even vinyl records and philosophy. There is usually something for everyone. This year, we are having a charity special for Cancer Research with some really amazing guests.

Why did you decide to do a show about this?
It was when Rob Deb (co-creator of the night) decided his last show in Edinburgh last year should be a Q&A session between him and the audience and talk about anything geeky they liked (or disliked)! Originally, we weren't planning on taking Geek Night Out up this year, but an opportunity came up to do a one-off show for Cancer Research UK.

How ready is it?
Every show goes by the skin of its teeth and we are never quite sure what will happen from one show to the next – I'm sure this charity edition will be no exception.

If your show was a dog, what kind of dog would it be?
Hopefully Bolt (that new Disney film) but more likely Old Yeller (that old Disney film).

Complete this sentence: "If you like (blank) then you'll like my show"
"If you like giving to good causes and having a laugh while doing so, then you'll like my show."

Is the Edinburgh Comedy Award important to you?
Comedy Award? For a one-off charity show? It would have to feature Darth Vader himself doing a striptease to get any attention for the awards!

What is the most frightening thing about the Edinburgh Festival?
Checking your bank balance at the start and the end of the festival.

Which other acts would you recommend this year?
Well, obviously the acts on our bill for the evening. Like who you ask? Well, like Reginald D Hunter, Dan Antolpolski, Wil Hodgson, Richard Sandling, Imran Yusuf, The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre, Nick Helm and Rob Deb. I hear most, if not all, are most awesomely great.

Can you recommend where to get the best pie/pint in Edinburgh?
I only seem to know where to get the best pies once I'm drunk. So ask me again when I'm shitfaced and then follow me to the nearest pie emporium.

Sum up the festival in one word
Swamp.

Geek Night Out Charity Evening is on August 17 at 11.40pm at the Counting Horse. It is free and a non-ticketed event.
