10 Questions with... Jack Whitehall
Presenter of Channel 4's TNT Show and Big Brother's Little Brother Jack Whitehall takes his debut solo show, Nearly Rebellious, to Edinburgh this year, so how will he fare with those tough crowds away from the cameras?
What is your show (Nearly Rebellious) about?
About wanting to be rebellious, trying to make a difference and how hard it is to actually do that. It's also about me growing up and my dad as well, he's really the star of the show.
Why did you decide to do a show about this?
First I put together all my jokes, then it kind of came organically (sorry that's the wankiest thing I think I've ever said). I realised I've always wanted to be a bit of a rebel but never been very good at it. It's a show for everyone though as it's a chance to come and revel in someone else's failure, we love that!
How ready is it?
Nearly there the odd tweak needed, plus I'll be littering it with the odd topical element, if the news is worthy of mocking.
If your show was a dog, what kind of dog would it be?
A dead one.
Complete this sentence: "If you like (blank) then you'll like my show"
"If you like 'over-rated cocky TV presenters with delusions of grandeur who are relatively unproven in the Edinburgh environment and possibly don't have enough material to stretch the hour-long format,' then you'll like my show." Not love it just like.
Is the Edinburgh Comedy Award important to you?
Awards are not important to me... in performer talk that translates as, "I'd kill a family member to get my hands on one!"
Which other acts would you recommend this year?
Tom Craine, Tom Deacon, Tom Wrigglesworth, John Gordillo, Stewart Lee, Sarah Millican... I could go one, but I won't or you'll just go see them and not me, which if i'm being honest you probably should.
What is the most frightening thing about the Edinburgh Festival?
Hygiene. I become vile after a month up there without my mother to look after me. I stick to things and smell. If you see me up there it would advisable to shout abuse or praise from a distance, as I will stink.
Any tips on where to get the best pint or pie?
Sneak a little bottle of spirit from a newagents into the venue then make all your pints 'dirty' pints, that's my trick, or stand outside one of the breweries, they smell so strongly of alcohol if you inhale for long enough you'll probably get pissed.
Sum up the festival in one word
Magical (the second most wanky thing I've ever said... and in the same interview, I'm on fire!).
Jack Whitehall – Nearly Rebellious is on from August 5-30 (except August 11, 18, 25) at 7:15pm at the Pleasance Upstairs. Click here for tickets
