Milo McCabe – 10 Edinburgh questions
London comedy fans may know Milo McCabe as his Portuguese character Philberto, but his Fringe show is a real-life tale about how his dad – a well-known stand-up in the 80s/90s – WAS A VERY NAUGHTY BOY
1. What is your show about?
The show is an inquiry into / celebration of / examination of my dad's past as a comic, in the guise of a multi-character comedy show. My dad "lifted" a routine from a very prominent comedian back in the early nineties, performed it on TV and got in a bit of trouble for it. In the show, I centre on that, some interactions he had with other comics in the past and other family stuff, tying it into a "This Is Your Life" format ... with me basically playing everyone, Eddie Murphy / Martin Lawrence style. Oh and there's a big twist at the end.
2. Describe it in 3 words.
DAD FUCKED UP.
3. What is your favourite part of the show?
One of my characters wasn't really working in the previews. He was based on the real-life agent who sued my dad and was just a little bit too unlikeable, so I had to reduce him to a video clip. In his place, I've got a brand new guy based on someone from my dad's past and he's the most fun to play at the moment, because he's such a massive twat. His name is Troy Hawk.
4. If your show were a dog, what type of dog would it be?
In an ideal world, a staffy / boxer cross – lean and muscular, almost no fat on the bones whatsoever ... playful, fun and very rewarding if paid attention to!
5. If you could change one thing about the Fringe, what would it be?
The money that's sucked out of my life. The festival has made me adopt, by necessity, a very unmaterialistic viewpoint.
6. Name 3 other shows you'd recommend seeing.
Could I have more please? Thanks. Chris Henry – We Need to Talk (free Fringe), Dr George Ryegold's God in a Bag, Paul Foot and anything Dr Brown is in. I am firmly in the camp that is destroyed by everything he does. Oh and Chris Stokes! He won the Leicester Comedy award this year and his show is a gem. And Chris McCausland.
7. What would you be doing this summer if you weren't in Edinburgh?
Playing in comedy clubs and hitting the punch dummy in my garage. Oh and taking my staffy/boxer cross dog for a walk.
What was the best/worst thing about having a comedian as a father?
Best was definitely in the playground, boasting to the other kids about my dad being on TV. Worst was an article from the Sun highlighting my dad's joke theft (on said TV programme) being passed around the maths class behind my back when I was 14.
9. Do you remember his reaction the first time he saw [Milo's most successful character so far] Philberto?
Yes. He was bemused. I don't think he was too chuffed about not being the only comedian in the family anymore. Now he tends to laugh loudest and for a bit too long!
10. What does your father think about comedy "these days"?
He can be a little cynical. He is very very choosy about what makes him laugh. He loves Terry Alderton and Andrew Bird and enjoyed Chris McCausland's show when we previewed with him. But I've seen him dismiss quality comedians out of hand and I've been suprised by some of the acts he hasn't enjoyed. I dragged him along to Dr Brown last year, eagerly anticipating his response. When I was wiping my tears away at the end I realised it had been a bit of a long hour for him. "It's just silly faces. I can do silly faces." OK Dad, well YOU go sell out the Soho Theatre then.
Now, this is a clip of Milo appearing at the Comedy Store as "Tyson Moon, son of a 70s comedian" ...
