10 Questions with George Ryegold

Thursday, August 26 2010

Dubious doctor character George Ryegold has been getting good reviews for his Edinburgh show this year, and here the man himself introduces it ...

George Ryegold

EiF: Tell us a bit about your show.
GR: Well I’ve been called "wicked, twisted and deliciously dark" and "comedy’s answer to a burst colostomy bag". I’d go along with that.

EiF: How would you describe it in three words.
GR: How about ‘great family fun’ or ‘two thumbs up’?

EiF: What's your favourite part of it?
GR: I'm rather fond of most of it, but especially the bits where people take a moment to decide whether to laugh or furrow a disapproving brow.

EiF: Complete this sentence: "If you like benign tumours in Speedos, then you'll like my show."

EiF: Is the Edinburgh Comedy Award important to you?
GR: It's always nice to be appreciated. I'm happy if just one person comes up after a show and says they liked it but were too ashamed to laugh out loud – and then hands me an award.

EiF: What is your Edinburgh daily regime?
GR: Awake; medicate inevitable chest infection with powders and warming spirits; enjoy the comedy of others; fret backstage; do my show; medicate inevitable chest infection with beer and warming spirits; sleep; awake, and so on and so forth.

EiF: What's your favourite spot in Edinburgh?
GR: Anywhere with chums and a pint.

EiF: What advice would you give to an Edinburgh virgin?
GR: Bite your lower lip and enjoy as much of it as you can without crying.

EiF: Name 3 other comics you would recommend seeing.
GR: I know for a fact that there are definitely more than three comedians worth seeing this year. It's hard to choose, but as a small sample of greatness I would have to say Nick Helm: Keep Hold of the Gold, Dave Gibson (aka Ray Green: Adventures in Telly Land) and Tom Adams’s show is also excellent.

EiF: Sum up how do you feel about this year's Edinburgh in one word.
GR: Engorged.
