EiF's top 15 Edinburgh debutants
Punters! Take a punt! By sticking to the Edinburgh stalwarts, you're picking from only one shelf in the pantry. Albeit a well-stacked one. Here are EiF's pick of the comics performing their debut solo Fringe show (they may even catch the eye of the Edinburgh Newcomer Award panel.)
• Abandoman – Hackney Empire New Act winners who wouldn't be a surprise nominee for the newcomer award. The trio have been a massive hit on the London circuit this year with their improvised hip hop comedy tracks based on audience suggestions.
• Seann Walsh (pictured) – Seann has established pedigree through a support slot for Stephen K Amos and warming up QI crowds (with jokes, not deep-tissue massage). He possesses sickeningly natural timing and self-assurance and has rightly been compared to Dylan Moran.
• Greg Davies – Already established as a comedy powerhouse, having starred in Channel 4 coming of age sitcom The Inbetweeners and one of awesome sketch trio We Are Klang. His debut solo effort doesn't disappoint.
• Robert White – a manic gag machine who never appears without keyboard and tank top. Another hit on the circuit, and often the most memorable act on the bill due to his unique delivery and frenetic joke rate. Can be a right filthy bugger, too. Here is an interview with Robert.
• Lee Kern – Lee is a refreshing comic voice with a similar rogueish charm to Carl Donnelly, only with riskier material. He is a film-maker turned comedian, and the best thing to be associated with Big Brother this side of George Orwell.
• Andi Osho – A comedian/actor who is a persuasive and self-assured performer, It wasn't long before Andi graduated from circuit to TV with appearances on Tonightly, Mock the Week and most recently Stand Up For the Week. Interview with EiF coming soon.
• Gareth Richards – A comic who'd probably be much higher up the comedy ladder were he nailing the London circuit every night not a family man living in Bournemouth, but that's probably to his credit. Peppers his gentle stand-up with folksy comedy songs (he's better than that makes him sound).
• Henry Paker – Also appearing with Mike Wozniak in Golden Lizard, Henry also has a solo show which will be largely improvised. Sounds risky but he's a regular MC so he knows what he's doing and when he flies, he really flies. Look out for an EiF interview coming soon.
• John-Luke Roberts (left) – Last seen on the Fringe in 2008 with Nadia Kamil as droll duo Behemoth, John-Luke is LiF's tip for a Newcomer nomination. Inventive and erudite, he can satisfy fans of both the old-fashioned gag and the surreal.
• Sara Pascoe – A relative newcomer but one with an established acting career (The Thick of It, Free Agents), Sara combines stand-up, comedy and sketchlets with intelligence and flare. Read an interview here.
• Doc Brown – Doc (real name Ben Smith) has been livening up circuit gigs for a couple of years with his rap/comedy crossover. Question remains over if he is a bit lightweight for a full hour but certainly has star quality.
• Kevin Eldon – one of the most intriguing shows on the Fringe, you'll probably already know Kevin as one of the greatest comic actors we have with absolutely nothing to prove. So can he reconfigure his talents into a one-hour stage show?
• Gary Delaney – Another who is hardly a newcomer, having been long-established as a headliner on the circuit. An out-and-out gag merchant who is darker than Milton Jones/Tim Vine and more likeable than Jimmy Carr. Don't be surprised if he goes straight in with an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination.
• Toby – A new character duo that comedians are getting rather excited about, Toby are sisters Sarah and Lizzie who are competing for their mother's affections through inappropriate skits. Find them on the Free Fringe.
• The Boy With Tape On His Face – Tape Face is Sam Wills, a former street performer who comes to Edinburgh from New Zealand with awards under his arm for his mime/puppetry vaudeville throwback show. Interview here.
